Description of MarkThe mark consists of This is the symbol for the Paperclip Resistance Movement that was started November 8, 2024 on Bainbridge Island Washington by Oliver and Janice Pedersen. Ollie's dad was born in Norway in 1896 and fought in WW1, WW2 and the Korean war. To honor his legacy of fighting to protect democracy, the Pedersen's started the revival of the Paperclip Resistance that was a historical symbol used by the Norwegians as a symbol of resistance to an authoritarian government that had occupied their country during WW2. Teachers and students wore paperclips in their lapels and as jewelry, as a symbol of resistance, “bound together,” against their oppressors during the German Occupation. Symbols act as a universal shorthand that transcends language barriers, speeds our comprehension and fosters a shared understanding. They provide a sense of connection and shared understanding within a community. They connect us to memories, traditions and our heritage, strengthening our sense of identity and belonging. This Paperclip Resistance Movement is a revival of the past legacy of the brave Norwegian people who never gave up. We can draw on their strength and courage once again, to openly demonstrate our own courage and resolve and be identified as someone who NEVER GIVES UP, by simply wearing a paperclip. Oliver and Janice's hope is that no matter one’s income, everyone can join the cause with a symbol everyone can afford and is readily available. A symbol we can rally around, that has already been identified as an image for the preservation of democracy. For a second time in recent history, this has now become a grassroots movement, for the people and by the people.
