Goods and Services | Is a nonprofit initiative designed to specifically address the isolation, forced idleness, lack of purpose and connectedness that disabled vets and their families so often feel (as do many other people with disabilities). It centers on programs and activities that uniquely interweave highly accessible recreational, respite, educational, vocational and entrepreneurial opportunities, within a framework that fosters interconnectedness, camaraderie, and shared purpose. One example involves a deluxe dive / excursion boat charter enterprise run by and primarily for wounded and otherwise disabled veterans and their families. This pilot program is envisioned to include a spacious, liveaboard, partially climate controlled, completely accessible vessel that will allow families--regardless of the severity of the disability--to enjoy extended excursions together, and in the company of other such families. The vessel will include common areas sizable enough to accommodate small-scale educational and social events. It will be augmented by dedicated, accessible dockside accommodations (of limited scope; not a full-scale hotel) that include more expansive conference space, an accessible swimming pool, and other appropriate appointments. The enterprise will be managed, crewed and maintained by wounded or otherwise disabled vets, in the shore-side hospitality and support functions as well as the onboard ones. It will include comprehensive training components (internships, apprenticeships, etc.) in all relevant functions, such as culinary arts, seamanship, and scuba instruction.Guests will not be limited to veterans; people with disabilities from all walks of life will be served as well. (Charters for completely able-bodied groups may also be available on a fee basis.) The vessel, its crew and guests will also serve as traveling ambassadors for the wounded veteran and disability communities, as well as their caregivers and enabling technology providers, highlighting human capacity and spirit, and showcasing state of the art assistive technology |
